THE GEOFFREY PARSONS AWARD 2012 FINALISTS ANNOUNCED

The Accompanists’ Guild of SA’s 28 year old competition, The Geoffrey Parsons Award, named in honour of Australia’s legendary vocal accompanist, is one of the major events of the 2012 Festival of Accompanists.

In keeping with the Guild’s acknowledgement of the professional aspirations of their competitors, the cash-pool is a significant $6,000, supported by The Royal Commonwealth Society.

On Monday and Tuesday, several pianists competed in the auditions. Three were selected to take part in the Final. All competitors performed works of their own choice with soloist/s of their own choice. They then completed a sight reading test before performing, without rehearsal, the set work.

For this year’s Geoffrey Parsons Award, the set work for bass clarinet and piano is Scherzo Capriccioso by Austrian composer, Alfred Uhl. Each competitor will perform it with Adelaide clarinettist, Peter Handsworth.

Peter Handsworth was awarded a first class Honours degree in 1987 after the completion of four years study at the Elder Conservatorium with David Shephard. Further postgraduate studies in Germany with Wolfgang Meyer saw the beginning of an extensive international career as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player throughout Europe, Japan, Australia, South America and South East Asia. He has received invitations to perform at numerous International Music Festivals including Lochenhaus and Schleswig-Holstein, numerous Radio and Television broadcasts in Europe and Australia, CD recordings and performances with such eminent artists as Sabine Meyer, Eddie Daniels, Isabelle van Keulen, Michael Ponti and the Wihan Quartet have been some of his career highlights. He is presently Lecturer in Clarinet at the Elder Conservatorium of Music.

Peter and his colleagues, well-known musicians and educators, Associate Professor, Elizabeth Koch OAM, Head of Performance, Elder Conservatorium of Music and freelance accompanist and Co*Opera repetiteur, Julie Sargeant judged the competitors’ performances in terms of style, technique, presentation and ensemble skills.

Guild Founder and President, Diana Harris remarked, “We thank the Royal Commonwealth Society for their support which allows the Guild to offer a first prize of $5000 which is much more in keeping with the value of the Geoffrey Parsons Award now the most prestigious award in Australia for the accompanist/associate artist.”

The three Finalists performing in the Final on Saturday evening, who will be competing for cash-prizes totalling $6,000, are:

• Penelope Cashman

• Yuh Tsun Wu

• Patrick Keith

The Jury for the Final of the Geoffrey Parsons Award will be chaired by the Guild’s pianist in residence for the 2012 Festival of Accompanists, Timothy Young. Australian National Academy of Music Artist in Residence in Adelaide for recitals with British wind virtuosos Michael Collins- clarinet and Celia Craig- oboe.

Timothy will be joined by Associate Professor Elizabeth Koch OAM and Julie Sargeant. The Finalists will perform a 25 to 30 minute recital with their own associate artist(s) as well as including the set work with Peter Handsworth. ENDS

On July 9, the Final of the Accompanists’ Guild of SA’s Geoffrey Parsons Award, named in honour of Australia’s greatest accompanist, took place in the Hartley Concert Room at The Elder Conservatorium of Music, University of Adelaide. The Award has become a centerpiece of the annual Festival of Accompanists.

In announcing the winners, Leslie Howard, a Trustee of the Geoffrey Parsons Trust in London remarked ‘I’m sure Geoffrey Parsons would have been impressed that such a competition in his name exists in Adelaide South Australia. It was a pleasure to see some adventurous repertoire choices and such thorough preparation. It was typical of the spirit in which Geoffrey assisted young musicians that we had the very generous participation of such a distinguished artist as Natsuko Yoshimoto with whom all finalists rehearsed and performed.’

The 2009 winners were:
FIRST PRIZE ($3,000) Mark Sandon (Gilberton, SA)
SECOND PRIZE ($600) Chris Lian-Lloyd (Paradise, SA)

Adelaide: 25 June 2007 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Each July, the Accompanists’ Guild of South Australia presents a program of events celebrating the art of the Accompanist. The Festival includes concerts, master-classes and Australia’s most significant prize for piano accompanying, The Geoffrey Parsons Award.

Guild Founder and Secretary, Diana Harris says, “This Festival continues to give Accompanists the recognition they deserve. For one week only they are top of the bill. Where else in the world would the pianist at the piano be named ahead of the singer or instrumentalist in front of the piano?”

This year, the major drawcard is the musician in residence, French pianist, Jean Paul Sévilla, piano soloist and chamber musician of acclaim, internationally recognized pedadgogue and the formative teacher of the internationally acclaimed soloist, Angela Hewitt.

Sévilla’s Residency includes: a Recital of César Franck & Ravel with Canadian compatriot and Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s Concertmaster, Terence Tam, (Wednesday, 11 July at 1.10pm), two masterclasses (Mon7 at 7pm and Wed 11 at 4pm) and chairing the Jury for the Geoffrey Parsons Award (Thurs 12 at 7pm).

He will also perform a solo recital for Recitals Australia (Fri 13 at 6.30pm).

The Guild’s emphasis on education and professional development are in strong focus in the Festival with performances by Primary, Secondary and Tertiary student accompanists in the Wednesday lunch time concerts in Pilgrim Church (July 11 & 18). Secondary Students from the Young Accompanists’ Showcase will join their professional soloists on Tuesday 11 at 12.10 in the “curtain raiser” to the Sévilla/Tam recital.

The Geoffrey Parsons Award, with prizes worth $2,500, has become Australia’s much sought after prize for the Accompanist. The Guild is immensely pleased to acknowledge the impact this Award has had on the careers of some of our nation’s leading and emerging accompanists & ensemble pianists. The Parsons Award Final (Thurs 12 at 7.00pm) will highlight 3 accompanists. Each will perform a program including a set work with ASO violist, Cecily Satchell, plus repertoire of their own choice.
